Paolo Baldini, bassist of Italian bands B.R.Stylers and Africa Unite, is one of the most interesting producers of the Italian music scene, his collaborations ranging from pure reggae (Mellow Mood) to electronic dub (Dub Sync) and rock’n’roll with world music nuances (Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti). Italy’s most important independent label La Tempesta will release the first full-length album of his DubFiles project on October 15th 2014. DubFiles officially debuted at the beginning of 2013 and originally consisted in a series of online videos, documenting what happens inside Baldini’s Alambic Conspiracy Studio, when he is at the mixing desk, dubbing the productions of his own team, and singers deliver alternative versions of the same riddims. Hundreds of thousands views later, it was time to turn the videos into a proper album, featuring the following singers: Jacob, L.O. and Jules I from Mellow Mood, Andrew I, Forelock (from Sardinian band Arawak) and Spanish rising star Sr. Wilson. They all take part in the 'All-Stars’ team touring with Baldini when DubFiles is performed live, while special guests on the album are Portuguese superstar Richie Campbell, Australian artist Dub Fx and British rapper Rawz. DubFiles reminds of the countless collaborations between Jamaican producers and DJs (like “Yabby You meets Trinity at King Tubby’s Dub Station”), and is willingly analog in both sounds and effects.
Baldini displays his mixing and dubbing skills in an album which bears witness to the productivity of the Italian producer and his team.
Paolo Baldini nasce a Pordenone nel 1975. È considerato uno dei produttori più interessanti del panorama indipendente italiano. Con la sua prima band (B.R.Stylers) si distingue nel panorama reggae italiano per l’uso predominante dell’elettronica e di sonorità di ispirazione UK, che lo avvicinano a nomi come Revolutionary Dub Warriors e Zion Train e che saranno suo segno distintivo per un lungo periodo. Nel 2006 entra a far parte degli Africa Unite, di cui produce due dischi (Controlli e Rootz). La collaborazione con Madaski si estende anche al progetto Dub Sync, di cui è bassista e produttore. Il suo approccio si fa sempre più analogico e ispirato ai grandi nomi del dub made in Jamaica come King Tubby o Scientist. Nel 2010 produce per i Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti “Primitivi Del Futuro”, esperimento di contaminazione rock-reggae, che avrà un seguito in “Nel Giardino Dei Fantasmi”, dove invece il rock è tinto di world music. È il produttore storico dei Mellow Mood, sicuramente il suo prodotto di respiro più internazionale, e di cui cura anche i progetti paralleli. Nel 2014 esordisce per La Tempesta con il suo progetto DubFiles, testimonianza del suo lavoro di dubmaster, accompagnato da diversi cantanti (Mellow Mood, Forelock, Richie Campbell, Sr. Wilson, Andrew I e Dub Fx).
